Most
trading activities will come to a halt in some parts of Accra as traders plan
to commemorate the burial of the late President John Evans Atta Mills on Friday.
The
Ghanaian
Times gathered at Mallam, Kaneshie and Circle Pedestrian markets and
lorry stations that, most traders who spoke under anonymity, said they would
not go to the market whilst a few of them said they would be at the market in
the morning and leave before the time of the burial.
An
Okro seller, Auntie Adoley, said she would be at the market dressed in her
funeral cloths to sell to the very few people she was hoping might pass by.
She
called on the public to purchase what they wanted to buy because on that day
they might not get what they wanted.
Some
cloths sellers told the Ghanaian Times, they had in stock
very few of the funeral cloths printed specifically for the funeral and called
on the manufacturers to bring more to the market.
Some
‘trotro’ drivers also said they would not be running the principal streets in
the city because some of the roads would be closed to traffic and motorists.
Bus
drivers also said they would be willing to convey people to the independence
square for free if they wished to grace the ceremony.
“As
for me I will wait for them to finish with the burial, then I will go out and
see what is going on in town and see, if I will get one or two ‘dropping’ to
make a little money for the day, but I will not do anything serious,” Paa Yaw,
a taxi driver said.
Some
of them said, they were saddened by the death but “life still goes on even
after the death of a loved one.”
