An Accra circuit court on Monday sentenced a 35-year-old mason to seven years imprisonment for defiling a seven-year-old girl.
The accused Yaw Manu, pleaded not guilty but the court presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, found him guilty and sentenced him.
Presenting the facts of the case, Assistant Superintendant of Police Sarah Acquah said the victim lives with her grandmother at Fiise, near Amasaman while the accused is a resident at Taifa.
She told the court that on November 14, 2011 at about 1pm, the victim’s grandmother sent her to buy her some fish and the accused, who was working in house adjacent to the victim’s, asked her to buy him a sachet of water.
On her return the accused asked her to bring the water to him in one of the uncompleted buildings where he was working.
The accused grabbed the victim, forcibly removed her underpants and had sex with her on a piece of wood.
ASP Acquah said after the act, the accused ordered the victim to have her bath as soon as she got home and warned her not to tell the grandmother about the ordeal.
The prosecutor said the victim’s grandmother however detected that the girl had problem with her walking and on questioning her, the victim disclosed that the accused had sex with her.
A report was consequently made to the police at Amasaman who issued her with a medical form to go to hospital where it was proven that the victim had been defiled
