West African mining, power experts starts networking

The Eighth West African Mining and Power Conference (WAMPOC) and the 10th West African International Mining and Power Exhibition (WAMPEX) were yesterday launched in Accra.
It had the theme “Deepening partnerships for the sustainable development of Africa’s mineral and energy resources”.
It is aimed at creating platform for West African mining and power sectors to network with other countries and other business experts.
It will also provide a blend of experience and knowledge for showcasing and discussing the challenges and future prospects of Africa’s mining and energy sectors within a typical Ghanaian context.
Launching it, The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines Dr. Toni Aubynn said the mining companies for the past years had been making tremendous contributions to the national economy in the form of infrastructure development.
Touching on the environmental degradation, Dr. Aubynn said that mining companies are doing their best to ensure the mining companies were doing their best to ensure the conservation and protection of the environment and gave assurance that they (mining companies) would live up to their responsibilities.
Mr. Kofi Ellis representative of the Volta River Authority (VRA) said that plans were advanced to increase electricity supply in the country following its high demand especially by the mining sector, and commended the mining companies for their financial support towards the sustenance of the energy sector.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Benjamin Nii Aryee, said the giant strides made by the country over the past years resulted in the unprecedented production of 3.3 million ounces of gold in 2012 noting that such opportunities still existed for other countries to access.
The exhibition will be mounted at the Accra International Conference Centre from Wednesday, June, 6 to Friday, June 8 whilst the conference starts between June 6 and June 7, 2012 respectively.
