The Accra Metropolitan Assembly yesterday unveiled a plaque to officially confirm rename of the Millennium City School at Salvation Cluster of Schools in Accra after the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The school now known as “President John Evans Atta Mills Educational Centre for Excellence” was named after him because it was the last outward appearance he made before his death.

It was to motivate the pupils to aspire to great heights in life since their school was named after a great person who had served the nation.

The 18 unit classroom block which consists of a Science and Computer Laboratories and a library, was commissioned by the late President as part of his commitment to the betterment of education in the country.

The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, unveiled the plaque as part of his visit to some selected schools in the metropolis to commemorate “My First Day at School.”

He visited the class one pupils of the Odorkor ‘2’ and ‘6’ Primaries, Kaneshie ‘6’ and ‘8’ Primaries, Mamprobi Ebenezer ‘1’ and Mamprobi North ‘1’ primaries and distributed a pack that contained Pencils, crayons, books and toys among others to more than 160 pupils.

Mr. Vanderpuije said the visit was to welcome the new pupils and to encourage them to learn as it was their responsibility.

He commended them for being in school and assured them of the government’s dedication to give them a modern facility to boost their learning.

“As part of making education better in Accra, we ended the shift system and we are building 18 units classroom blocks. The government is working hard to get you learning materials to make learning easier for you,” he stressed.

Mr. Vanderpuije advised them to co-operate with their teachers and also be in school always to help them become great persons in future to benefit the nation and their families.

As part of the visit, the Mayor commissioned a 20 seater toilet facility worth GHc 159,632 at the Kingsway Cluster of Schools and the Kaneshie Awudome Junior High School.

He cautioned the pupils to properly maintain the facility and promised to build one of the millennium city schools.
